"Do not be angry with the rain, it simply does not know how to fall upwards"
- Vladimir Nabokov
Hello People!
The monsoon clouds have started looming over the sky and this is the time when the scorching heat of the summer subsides to pave way for the monsoon clouds. So its already July right now and monsoon season is already at its peak in some of the areas of India. The rainy season starts in India during the end of June and early July and continues up to September. Its a total relief for us humans and even a relief for plants and animals.
Kids enjoy playing in the rain, people like to take walks in the rain with umbrella. But for moms and homemakers, there is no play in monsoon. All they can see is a messy home filled with musty smell, damp clothes, insects and bacteria.
But there is always solution to every problem.
Most common problems faced during monsoon are-
- Damp clothes
- Breeding mosquitoes in damp areas of house.
- Footprints filled with mud.
- Leaking umbrellas and raincoats.
- Leaking walls and roofs.
- Power cuts
- Clogging in drains
- Silverfish in wardrobe.
For Damp clothes - Buy Hangers.
Hang your clothes in hangers after washing them. Use a stand on which all your clothes can be hanged. Now put that stand in a room with fan on full speed. You can also use natural clothes freshener.
For Breeding mosquitoes - Use Natural remedies.
Instead of using suffocating mosquito repellents, try choosing natural methods to get rid of mosquitoes and insects this monsoon. Camphor being the best. This easily available ingredient could be the answer for how to kill mosquitoes in the house. Made from the extract of a tree, this compound has been found to have the longest mosquito repellent activity when compared to other natural products. Light camphor in a room and close all the doors and windows. Leave it this way for about fifteen to twenty minutes and go back to a mosquito free environment. Always keep a check near your surroundings, do not allow any kind of water to stagnate inside or around the house, as stagnant water is a ready breeding ground for mosquitoes.
For Footprints filled with mud- Use Synthetic mats.
Roll away your expensive carpets and instead, spread out synthetic mat, coir or decorative bamboo mats.
For Leaking walls and roofs- Get them Waterproofed.
Damp walls and terrace needs to get waterproofed. Get the drainage cleaned up as they tend to clog during the monsoon by filling up with mud, leaves and dirt. Seal the cracks formed in your walls and windows so that rain water doesn’t enter your home. Fill gaps between sliding windows with rubber lining to keep water from seeping through on a windy, rainy day. If you have metal surfaces that you suspect could get rusty, treat them with a waterproofing spray.
Other than that, while rains evoke different moods for different people, it is also true that time of rains is the best time to tend to the beautiful greenery in the backyard, garden or on the balcony. Monsoons are in fact, a joyous time of the year for those who love to see their plants grow faster and bloom in the glory of the rains. It is not only the rains but the fresh and cool breeze blowing all day long during the monsoon season and the humidity in the air that acts as a boon for the plants.
Monsoon is the most conducive climate to grow indoor plants at home as they absorb the humidity in the air and also get the help of little sunlight that peeps through the clouds. But keep them near the window as they have a tendency to increase the dampness in the house.
Keeping plants can automatically make your house healthy and happy.
The presence of moisture around us during the monsoon season works in many ways. The effect of this moisture can be witnessed everywhere. You can notice it on your wooden doors and windows as they do not open or close properly as they absorbed moisture and rainwater (if they are not in a shaded area). Painting or varnishing the door or window can fix your problem and make you house healthy.
This may seem overwhelming and a lot to do, but with a little planning and help from your family members, you can easily make your home a healthy and happy home this monsoon. Now the rainy evenings will no more be morose and filled with cleaning and tidying. Let your hair down and enjoy sipping some hot chai with pakoras the next time the Rain-Gods shower you with their love!
